I started about three years ago, however for the first year or two it was pretty on and off because I didn’t have my own equipment at the time. I only just got really serious about it in this last year and a half. And before that, I tried my hand at playing acoustic guitar, but I have very small and weak fingers which aren’t well suited for playing chords and whatnot.

From my experience I would say bass is easier to learn in comparison to guitar [if only because most chords make me want to dismember my own hands], but I’ve never once even held a violin so I can’t give much in that regard.
